Nephrologists using CareView360 see an increase of 57% in care coordination patient engagement per chronic care management patient.

Entering 2023, healthcare professionals are finding tremendous value in utilizing technology to access accurate data and easily-interpreted reports for clinical decision support to avoid making costly mistakes. One such example is Newstar Medical’s proprietary (patent-pending) medication safety product, CareView360. This innovative solution is helping nephrologists and other chronic care management providers provide patients with better care. The platform consolidates medication information from multiple physicians into one easily-accessible database to help in accurately identifying potential drug contraindications caused by medications prescribed by different doctors (or unprescribed medications) as well as effects based on a patient’s specific diagnoses.

More than 7 million patients in the United States are impacted by medication errors annually.

A Survey of Adverse Event Reporting Practices Among US Healthcare Professionals
Stergiopoulos, S., Brown, C.A., Felix, T. et al., 2016

More than 7 million patients in the United States are impacted by medication errors annually. According to the Food and Drug Administration, at least 100,000 medication errors are reported every year (FDA, 2019). This issue is compounded by significant numbers of under-reported adverse drug events. A study by the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development found that 66% of healthcare professionals reported that adverse drug events were under-reported due to the difficulty in determining whether any particular drugs were the cause behind an adverse drug event, given that most patients receive multiple therapies simultaneously. Miscommunication among healthcare providers also leads to errors in diagnosis or treatment. Poorly integrated healthcare systems exacerbate the situation even further.

As many as 50% of patients who are prescribed medications for the management of chronic conditions are affected [by medication nonadherence], causing an estimated $100 billion annually in preventable healthcare costs and 125,000 avoidable deaths.

The Unmet Challenge of Medication Nonadherence
Kleinsinger, 2018

Medication nonadherence for patients with chronic diseases also contributes to the problem. Studies have found that as many as 50% of long-term acute care patients are affected by medication nonadherence, causing an estimated $100 billion annually in preventable healthcare costs and 125,000 avoidable deaths (Kleinsinger, 2018). Inaccurate dosing or medication omissions can lead to catastrophic interactions between medications. Furthermore, if a patient is not taking the correct medications or is not taking them as prescribed, their treatment may be ineffective leading to the progression of the disease.

Unfortunately, there are no widely accepted solutions for improving medication adherence. Patients, especially elderly adults, face numerous challenges like complex medication regimens, treatment of asymptomatic conditions,  fear of side effects, or mistrust due to media influence (American Medical Association, 2006). Strategies to improve adherence are often costly and labor-intensive like direct observation or can be inaccurate like patient diaries or pill counts. These types of interventions are currently standard practice but have limited success rates.

The CareView360 urine test addresses these issues by providing a more comprehensive medication management solution for healthcare providers and patients with chronic diseases. The product enhances patient care by presenting an accurate interpretation of traditional diagnostic reports for providers, ensuring the right treatment the first time, which results in better care for the patient.

  • CareView360 reports show if medications are being taken as prescribed and detect non-prescribed drugs.
  • Urine-based medication reconciliation for nearly 200 medications, substances & OTCs.
  • Consolidated medication lists from multiple healthcare providers.
  • Indicates potential risks for drug-drug interactions (DDIs), contraindications, and inconsistencies.

The platform also helps to reduce adverse drug reactions and hospitalizations. One of the most innovative features of CareView360 is its ability to allow for a more comprehensive medication report. This not only results in more accurate diagnostic information but can also contribute to additional care coordination time. On average, nephrologists using CareView360 see an increase of 57% in care coordination patient engagement per chronic care management patient.

Newstar Medical’s CareView360 is an essential tool that helps healthcare providers in long-term care and chronic disease treatment reduce medication discrepancies. Having the capability to consolidate medication lists from multiple doctors and produce easy-to-interpret reports helps providers ensure the correct treatment, reduce adverse drug reactions and hospitalizations, and help return additional value to healthcare practices.
